Stick to the center lane for the first 100 meters. Obstacles come from both sides early on, and the middle gives you the most reaction time to dodge either direction.
Tomatoes matter more than distance in the early game. The speed rocket you earn from a full meter covers more ground than careful dodging ever will, and you're invincible while it lasts.
Each trap type has a tell: cages cast a downward shadow about half a second before landing, cameras have a steady red blink you can spot from two lane-lengths away, and spring traps make the ground shake right where they're buried.
